Violence kills 14, injures 250

DHAKA: At least 14 people were killed and over 250 people injured across the country during 60-hour hartal called by BNP-led 18-party alliance.

Day-1: At least six people, including one activist of Jamaat-e-Islami and three BNP and two Jubo League men, were killed in separate hartal violence on Sunday, the first day of 18-party’s 60-hour hartal.

The deceased were identified as Swapan Shil, resident of Balipara area of Pirojpur Sadar, Maruf Hossain, 22, son of Rabu Sheikh, of Nagarkanda municipal area of Faridpur district, Julhas Uddin Munnaf, 35, Jamaat Islami activist and Alamgir Hossain Shimul, 35, general secretary of Noapara municipal unit of Juba League, the youth wing of ruling Awami League of Pabna district, Shahjahan 40, a local leader BNP of Bogra and Siddique a BNP activist of Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj.

In Pirojpur: An activist of Juba League was killed in an attack by the hartal supporters in Zianagar under the Sadar upazila of the district

In Faridpur: A Jubo Dal activist was shot dead in a clash between hartal supporters and cops in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur district.

In Pabna: An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a clash between BNP-Jamaat men and Juba League-Chhatra League men in Muladuli area under Iswardi upazila of the district.

In Jessore: A municipal unit Juba League leader was killed in BNP-Jamaat attack at Avoynagar in the district.

In Bogra: A BNP activist was killed and five others were injured in a factional clash between two groups of the party in Tin Matha intersection area under Gabtali upazila of the district on Sunday noon.

In Narayanganj: A BNP man was killed in a clash between Awami League and BNP at Araihazar upazila in the district in the noon.

Day-2: Six people, including Awami League activist, 3 BNP leaders, a truck driver and a teen-aged passer-by, were killed and 131 injured across the country in second day of hartal.

The deceased were identified as Shahjada, 28, and activist of ruling Awami League, Wasim 40, a truck driver hailed from Cox’s Bazar, Abul Hossain, 56, the president of Harinakundi upazila unit BNP and Daulatpur Union Unit BNP of Jhenidah, M Arju Hossain Paltu Mia, 16, son of Mokbul Hossain of Old Bazar area of Chandpur and Abdul Alim, joint secretary of Tangail Mirzpur Upazila Jubo Dal.

In Jamalpur: An Awami League activist was killed in a clash with BNP men at Islampur in Jamalpur on Monday morning.

In Tangail: Mirzapur upazila Jubo Dal joint secretary was killed in infighting while picketing during hartal hours in Sohagpara area of the district on Monday noon.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Alim, 40.

In Chittagong: A truck driver was killed in an attack of hartal supporters on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway under Satkania upazila of the district around 2:00am.

In Jhenidah: A leader of opposition BNP was killed in a bomb attack and firing by miscreants at Dakhalpur Bazar under Horinakunda upazila at 12:30pm.

In Chandpur: A teenage passerby was killed and 20 persons were injured in sporadic clash between ruling Awami League and BNP men at Old Bazar in the district town on Monday morning.

In the capital, police nabbed five hartal supporters from city’s Rampura and Gulshan area while they brought out processions and locked into clash with police around 7:30am.

Besides, at least six people were injured in a clash between pickets and police in the district town around 8:45am.

In Jatrabari: police held four hartal supporters while they blasted cocktails in city’s Jatrabari area.

In Savar, Dhaka: At least 20 people were injured in a clash between hartal supporters and law enforcers in Raj Fulbaria area under Savar upazila of the district at around 8:00am.

In Kishoreganj: Six people, including three policemen, were injured in a fierce clash in Bhairab upazila of the district at around 05:30am.

In Gazipur: at least 10 people were hurt in a clash between police and BNP men in the district town at around 9:00am.

In Narayanganj: Some 10 persons were injured in chase and counter chase between police-picketers in the metropolitan at around 9:30am.

In Blola, some 15 people, including four cops, were injured in a clash between hartal supporters and cops in the district town at 11:00am.

In Satkhira: Five activists of Awami League were injured in an attack of 18-party men in the district at around 11:30am.

In Faridpur: Four police personnel were injured in a clash with hartal supporters in Fukra Bazar area under Saltha upazila of the district around 8:00am.

In Comilla: At least 17 people, including a policeman, were injured and a pedestrian and five Jamaat-Shibir men were held form a clash between hartal supporters and cops in city’s Kandirpar and Chalkbazar area around 09:00am.

In Jessore: Ten people were injured in a triangular fierce clash between Awami League, BNP and law enforcers in Chachra area of the district tow at around 10:30am amid hartal.

In Dinajpur: Six picketers were held by police from a procession from Dhaka-Dinajpur highway around 10:30am.

Besides, eight people were held including upazila Jamaat Amir from Madarganj upazila in Jamalpur around 10:00am.

In another incident, three BNP men were held by law enforcers in Chaumuhoni area under Doublemuring Thana in Chittagong at around 11:30 as they blasted cocktails.

In Natore: A TV journalist of RTV received bullet injuries in a clash between AL and BNP in Kanaikhali area of the district at around 12:00 noon.

In Khagrachari: Four AL leaders-activists were injured as hartal supporters suddenly attacked on them at around 11:30am in Rahman Nagar area under Manikchari upajila of the district.

Day 3: A passerby was shot dead and a BNP activist was killed and 76 people were injured across the country in 18-party’s hartal’s last day.

The deceased were identified as Maruf, 18, son of Afsar Sarkar resident of Mohammadpur upazila of Magura district and a youth of Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong.

In Magura: A pedestrian was killed in chase and counter chase between hartal supporters and law enforcers in Dhoail Bazar area under Mohammadpur upazila of the district around 12:00 noon.

Held, Injured

In capital, police held seven BNP activists from city’s Hatirjheel, Shahjalal airport and Jagannath University areas when they brought out processions and blasted cocktails.

On the other hand, at least 15 people were injured in separate clashes between pickets and law enforcers in the city.

Besides, Officer-in-Charge of Hazaribagh Police Station Mainul Islam was injured critically as Jamaat-Shibir men hurled cocktail aiming him in city’s Dhanmondi area in the morning.

In Gazipur: At least 60 leaders and activists of 18-party, including the Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Abdul Mannan, were injured, councilor by bullet, in an hour-long clash between hartal supporters and law enforcers from 9:30am.

In Feni: At least 15 people were injured in a clash between police and BNP activists around 10:30am in Daganbhiyan upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.

In Natore: Police held six BNP-Jamaat men as they were picketing in Fulbagan area of the town.

Violence in Second day of hartal

Six people, including Awami League activist, 2 BNP leaders, a BNP activist, a truck driver and a teen-aged passer-by, were killed in separate violence in Tangail, Jamalpur, Chittagong, Chandpur, Jhenaidah, Kishoreganj on Monday.

The opposition alliance is observed the shutdown from 6:00am Sunday (October 27) to 6.00pm Tuesday (October 29) on demand of poll-time non-party caretaker government.
