DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the 7th national congress of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the associate youth body of the ruling Awami League.

Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the Awami League, opened the council by releasing pigeons and balloons at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday (Nov 23) morning.

More than 30,000 guests including delegates and councillors have attended the council session. Controversial leaders with alleged involvement in casino business and other irregularities have not been invited to the event, sources said.

The second session of the congress aiming to select Jubo League’s new leadership will be held at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in the afternoon.

Sources say the party will amend its constitution for bringing power-balance between its chairman and general secretary.

A draft charter has been prepared for getting nods of the councillors in the council session, sources close to the constitution sub-committee said.

The last council of Jubo League was held on July 14 in 2012 bringing Omar Faroque Chowdhury, recently relieved from the party for alleged involvement with casinos and other irregularities, and Harunur Rashid as chairman and general secretary, respectively.
