DHAKA: Jaitya Party Chairman HM Ershad has been laid to eternal rest at Palli Nibas in Rangpur.

He was buried at 5:45 pm on Tuesday (July 16).

JP acting Chairman GM Quader, JP Secretary General Moshiur Rahman Ranga and MP Abul Hossain Babla among others were present there.

Thousands of people were present at Palli Nibas to pay their last tribute. Many were seen crying.

Regarding Ershad’s burial in Rangpur, GM Quader said: “We wanted to take him to Dhaka after namaj-e-janaja at Rangpur Eidgah, but we’ve lost to the love of Rangpur’s people. HM Ershad’s wife Rowshan Ershad agreed with this decision.”

Ranga said: “We wanted national leader’s burial in Dhaka, so that individuals of home and abroad can pay their tribute to his grave. We’ll set up all the structures including museum next to his grave here (Rangpur).”

The fourth namaj-e-janaja of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad held at Rangpur Eidgah at 2:29 pm on Tuesday (July 16).

Political leaders of JP and other parties attended the funeral prayer. Hafez Mawlana Idris Ali led the prayer.

Earlier, Ershad’s body was airlifted to Rangpur cantonment at 11:50 am.  On behalf of Rangpur metropolitan police, he was given guard of honor.

90-year-old former military ruler HM Ershad died at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) here on Sunday (July 14) morning. He breathed his last at 7:45am.

He was suffering from various old age complications including low hemoglobin count, liver complications, and lung and kidney infections.
