DHAKA: Election Commission (EC) is sending a high level team to United Kingdom to analyze possibilities of Bangladeshi expatriates for their enrollment as Bangladeshi voters through National Identity (NID) card.

The team, led by Election Commissioner (EC) Md Rafiqul Islam, will hold a meeting in the UK on July 28.

EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed will accompany him.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK, Bangladesh community members and the UK authorities will take part in the meeting.

Before that, the EC team will take part in the 18th Cambridge Conference on Election Democracy scheduled for July 25.

Helaluddin Ahmed confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

EC NID registration wing Director General Brig Gen Mohammad Saidul Islam told Banglanews that a local server will be installed in the country concerned where the initiative will be implemented. 

Data of the Bangladeshi citizens will be assembled as input through several temporary servers connected to the local server.

The data will be brought home for analyzing at upazila levels to enroll the expatriates in voter lists here and issuing their NID cards as well.

However, EC earlier initiated a similar project in Singapore, upon direction by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

Around two crore Bangladeshis are living in various countries at present.
