DHAKA: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital for medical checkup and tests soon.

“The jail authority has been implementing decisions of the medical board, formed as per the High Court directives,” he told reporters after holding a meeting with a six-member BNP team at his secretariat Tuesday (Mar 5).

The minister said the medical board, selected by the court, will provide its assessment of her, upon which she will be taken to BSMMU following the jail code.

“The government has been providing proper treatment, checkup and test facilities along with all other healthcares for Khaleda Zia,” he added.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir led the six-member team of Standing committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

“BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s physical condition isn’t good. We have pleaded for her proper treatment, to the government through the home minister. He (Kamal) has listened to all our words attentively,” Fakhrul told reporters after the meeting.

“We hope he will keep all our words. He has informed (us) about initiating highest steps for proper treatment of Khaleda Zia,” he added.

Khaleda Zia was jailed for five years in a graft case in Feb, 2018.

She has been suffering various physical illnesses since earlier.
