DHAKA: Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday (Feb 6) said upazilla elections will be halted if necessary as no compromise will be made with any irregularities.

He was addressing an inaugural ceremony of training of returning and assistant returning officers of fifth Upazila Elections at Election Training Institute (ETI) in city’s Agargaon area.

“If returning officer thinks there is no congenial atmosphere for polls, he/she will recommend for halting elections,” the CEC added.

If any candidate or leaders of activists from any party violates law for which the election may go beyond the control of the returning officers, the election will be stopped. But there will be no compromise with irregularities in the upcoming elections.

CEC Huda asked the officers for letting people to vote their desired candidate. The candidate will be elected whom the voter considers eligible.

He advised the returning officers to instruct the law enforcers to check any irregularities and provide security to voters.

“You have to face embarrassed situation with the agents. Encourage the candidates to appoint agents in the polling station. The agent is very important. You will see it so that agents can stay at polling stations safely, fearlessly,” the CEC tells ROs.

Four election commissioners were also present at the training programme with EC secretary Helaluddin Ahmed in the chair.
