Political ambition in judiciary creates political instability: SQ Chowdhury

DHAKA: Opposition BNP`s standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury MP Sunday opined that the constitutional and political stability is disrupted due to political ambitions in the judiciary.

"The Chief Justices have maintained their tradition extending their support to military regimes. This has not changed much," he told a meeting, in the context of abrogation of two major constitutional amendments related to ratification of martial-law regimes and democratic transition.

The meeting was organized by Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal, opposition BNP`s front body, in the city demanding release of party leader Tarique Rahman and his younger brother Arafat Rahman Koko.

He alleged that the judiciary only supports the powerful. "We will also gain strength in the future and the judges will help us as well," said the BNP lawmaker.

Citing his experience as lawmaker for the last 32 years, an outspoken Chowdhury said, “Judges do not understand amendment, as it is done by parliament.”

He came to the conclusion that with the canceling of the 5th and the 7th amendments to the constitution, the 2nd and the 3rd parliaments also stood “illegal”.

Senior joint secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, adviser to the BNP chairperson Shamsuzzaman Dudu and president of Krishok Dal MA Taher also spoke.
