Golam Azam ÔÇÿkey manÔÇÖ of Jamaat yet, says Nizami

DHAKA: Golam Azam still calls the shot as ‘key person’ in Jamaat, detained Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami was quoted as saying during interrogation in DB police custody on Thursday morning.

Some officials of the interrogation team, on condition of anonymity, informed banglanews24.com.bd about the confessions reportedly being made by the beleaguered incumbent about the de-facto Jamaat supremo.

“While being interrogated over the case filed against the trio on February 12 for obstructing the president`s motorcade, Nizami asked why he alone was being accused of this incident; why not Golam Azam,” said one who is on the team.

Nizami is also remanded for three days just as Mojahid and Sayedee in the case.

“They don’t go for any action without the direction of Golam Azam, though he does not hold any executive post of the party officially,” said the DB official, quoting the Jamaat Ameer.

Azam, who had faced mock trial on war-crime charges in the 90s, retired as Ameer and from the party in 2000.

Replying to a question, Nizami told the interrogators that they had no intension to attack President’s convoy. He said ‘sorry’ for the incident.

Quoting Nizami, a DB source also informed Golam Azam is the mastermind behind all activities of the party as key decisions were being taken by him.

The case statement says some 1,500 to 1,600 activists of Jamaat and its front organisations, nine of them identified, blockaded the road at Fakirerpool, obstructing the president`s scheduled visit to a place. They also attacked police who tried to disperse them, causing injuries to some law enforcers.

Paltan thana OC Shahidul Haque told banglanews24.com.bd that Mojahid-Sayeddee would be interrogated again in the case in the evening. “The Jamaat trio confessed to all allegations,” he said.

Earlier, Nizami was being interrogated in a case filed with the city`s Paltan Police Station for attacking law enforcers and obstructing their work in February.

The three Jamaat leaders were arrested on June 29 and shown arrested in eight cases. They were also remanded for 16 days in five of those cases.
