5 BNP leaders’ remand order stayed

DHAKA: The High Court (HC) on Sunday stayed the order passed by a lower court that placed eight-day remand to five BNP leaders for police interrogation.

An HC bench comprising Justice Borhanuddin and Justice KM Quader passed the order in the afternoon.

Former attorney general AJ Mohammad Ali, Barrister Badruddoza Badal and Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association Mahbub Uddin Khokan moved for the petitions.

Attorney General Mahbub-e-Alam, additional attorney general Mamtazuddin Fakir and deputy attorney general Abdullah Al Mamun moved for the state.

On Thursday, a Dhaka court placed five top leaders of the main opposition BNP on an eight-day remand for police interrogation in two cases filed with Motijheel Police Station.

After two phases of hearings, Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim passed the order in presence of the accused.

The leaders are BNP standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, MK Anwar, BNP chairperson’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo and chairperson’s personal assistant Advocate Shimul Biswas.

On November 8, police arrested the five senior BNP leaders.

Later, two cases were filed against them under the Explosives Act and vehicle vandalism and obstructing police from discharging their duties.
