COX’S BAZAR: A suspected yaba trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox's Bazar.
The incident occurred near Keyari Khal area in Teknaf upazila on early Sunday (July 12).
The deceased was identified as- Syed Alam, 35, son of Syed Ahmed of Ward-1 under the municipality of the upazila.
BGB also seized 40,000 yaba tablets and a firearm with cartridges from the spot.
Teknaf BGB Battalion-2 Captain Lieutenant Cornel Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan confirmed the matter to Banglanews.
He said: “Being tipped-off about a large consignment of yaba would be smuggled into Bangladesh from Myanmar, a BGB team took position in Keyari Khal area in Teknaf at midnight. At one point, the team noticed two men roaming the area and another man crossing the Naf river into Bangladesh from Myanmar.”
The troops ordered the three to stop but they opened fired on law enforcers triggering a gunfight. The drug smugglers fled the scene at one stage leaving, one of their own with bullet wound and two BGB members injured, he said.
The injured person was taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex and then transferred to Cox's Bazar sadar hospital where on-duty physician declared him dead on arrival, the BGB official added.
