SUNAMGANJ: The lowlands and haor areas of Sunamganj have been inundated as the Surma and Jadukata rivers flowing above the danger mark. 

The water level of Surma river rose to 17cm above the danger mark at Shologhar point on Friday morning (July 10).

Within a period of a week, people in the district are witnessing fresh flooding again due to heavy rainfall and onrush of upstream water. Roads and crops in Sunamganj’s Nabinagar area have been swamped.

The Water Development Board of Sunamganj has recorded 183mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. It said Surma river's water level will continue to rise if rainfalls in India’s Assam and Meghalaya states increase further.

Floodwaters have started to enter the lowlands of Dowrabazar, Tahirpur and Jamalganj upazilas, affecting livestock and damaging crops and roads. 

In addition, Jadukata river in Tahirpur upazila is also flowing above danger mark triggering a second wave of floods in the area. Locals fears scarcity of foods if flood situation worsens further.

Sahibur Rahman, executive engineer of Sunamganj district Water Development Board, told Banglanews: “Flood situation might get worse as downpours  in the area to continue in the next three to four days. The district administration has been informed to take necessary preparations to tackle flood.”
