PABNA: A suspected top terrorist was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Shibrampur in Pabna sadar upazila early Wednesday (July 8).

The deceased was identified as Tanjib Sheikh, 35, son of Babu Sheikh of Ramchandrapur area under Pabna municipal area.

Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, superintendent of Pabna Police, confirmed the matter over a press release on Wednesday noon.

The release said police arrested Tanjib from Library Bazar on Tuesday night. He was wanted in several criminal cases. After confessional statement, police along with Tanjib conducted a drive in Shibrampur Switch Gate area for recovering arms.

When police reached the spot around 2:30am, associates of Tanjib opened fire on police forcing the law enforcers to fire back which triggered a shootout, the release said.

Tanjib was caught in the line of fire while trying to flee from police custody and sustained bullet injury. Later, he was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered a pistol, a revolver and bullets from the spot. Three police members were also injured during the gunfight. They are currently undergoing treatment at Pabna General Hospital, the release added.
