CHATTOGRAM: A man was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Chattogram, hours after he had allegedly hacked his three-year-old nephew to death Tuesday night (July 7).

The gunfight incident occurred in Jharnapara area under Double Mooring police station in the port city on early Wednesday (July 8).

The deceased was identified as Md Jasimuddin Razu, 32, son of Manir Ahmed from Hazipara area under Double Mooring police station. 

Five policemen including Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP, west zone) Additional Deputy Commissioner AAM Humayun Kabir, Double Mooring police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Swadip Barua, were injured in the gunfight, police claimed.

Moreover, an LG firearm, bullet, a foreign knife and 875 pieces of yaba pills were recovered from the spot, said police.

According to police sources, Razu was facing 13 cases under different police stations in Chattogram. He was also the main accused in the case filed over the murder of three-year-old Mehrab, who was his nephew.

Earlier on Tuesday night, Razu was engaged in an altercation with his brother’s wife Nilu Akhter. At one point, he stabbed Nilu’s minor daughter Mehrab to death with a knife and fled the scene. Later at night, Nilu filed a murder case with Double Mooring police station accusing Razu as the prime accused. 

When police conducted a drive to detain Razu, he opened fire at law enforcers triggering a gunfight, said police sources.
