COX’S BAZAR: Two suspected Rohingya drug peddlers were killed in a reported gunfight with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox’s Bazar. 

The incident occurred in Hnila border area of Teknaf upazila on early Monday (July 6).

The deceased were identified as Md Alam, 26, son of Md Shafiq of Kutupalong Rohinya camp, and Md Yasin, 24, son of Md Ershad Ali of Balukhali Rohinya camp.

Law enforcers also recovered 50,000 yaba tablets, one Chinese gun and two bullets from the spot.

Lt Col Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-2, confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

Foysal Khan said acting on a tip-off about a drug consignment, a BGB team took position at Wabrang Nanirbari area on the bank of Naf River at Hnila union around 3am.

At one point, they noticed several smugglers crossing the Naf River. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, smugglers opened fire, forcing them to retaliate, which triggered a gunfight, said the BGB official.

Later BGB members found the two bullet-hit bodies of the drug peddlers on the spot. Two of the BGB men were also injured in the incident, he added.
