Jamuna boat capsize: Death toll reaches 5; 14 missing

SIRAJGANJ: The death toll from the boat capsize in Jamuna River near Chauhali of Sirajganj reached five as two more bodies were recovered this morning (May 27). 

However, 14 persons are still missing in the incident.

Police have recovered the body of an unidentified youth floating from the Jamuna river in Jotpara area this morning. Later, members of the fire service recovered the body of another person identified as Afzal, son of Abdur Rashid of Koijuri area of Shahjadpur upazila.

Chauhali Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Rashedul Islam Biswas confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

The engine-run-boat with over 73 passengers on board was heading towards Chauhali from Enayetpur. A number of passengers managed to swim ashore immediately after the boat had capsized around 1:30 pm near Sathalchar village of the upazila, he said.

On information, members of Police and Fire Service went to the spot and started rescue operation. 

Police and locals then immediately rescued 54 passengers and later recovered three bodies. 

The deceased have been identified as Pashan Fakir, 65, son of late Zahir Fakir from Gounakandi village of Belkuchi upazilla, Naimul Islam, 4, son of Shamim Hossain of Kalagachhi village and Sheikh Kamal Mollah, 45, son of late Majid Mollah from Subarnatali village of Nagorpur upazilla in Tangail district.
