General holiday from March 26 to April 4

The government has declared general holiday in the country from March 26 to April 4 as part of its protective measure against fast spreading of coronavirus.

Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam came up with the disclosure today (March 23).

Government offices, except those involved in emergency services such as law enforcement agencies and hospitals, have been declared closed.

Kitchen markets will remain open during this period. People have been asked not to leave their homes, except to collect emergency supplies and daily necessities.

Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, principal secretary to the prime minister, said a monitoring cell at Prime Minister's Office will open for 24 hours.

Public transport will remain limited and people have been asked to avoid using those as well to fight against COVID-19.

Banking services have also been limited and Bangladesh Bank, the central bank of the country, will give necessary directives in this regard.

Army was ordered to cooperate local administrations to implement the decision of maintaining social distance among the mass people.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh confirmed third death from coronavirus (COVID-19) and six more cases of infection pushing the total number of confirmed cases to 33 in last 24 hours across the country. 

According to the director of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), of infected persons, three are male and rest female. Of total patients, five recovered and were discharged.

The fast spreading coronavirus has so far claimed 15,306 lives worldwide till Monday (March 23) afternoon (Local Time).
