4 killed as trawlers capsize in Bay of Bengal

COX’S BAZAR: At least four people, including a child, drowned as two overcrowded boats capsized in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday (Feb 19).

The deceased identified as Md Akkas, 28, Md Minhaz, 10, Abdul Malek, 50, and Abdul Jalil, 32, hailed from Banshkhali upazila.

“The first accident took place around 9:00 am and the second one at 3:00 pm due to overcrowding,” said Rezaul Karim, the officer-in-charge of Banshkhali Police Station.

The victims were going to Cox’s Bazar from Banshkhali upazila in Chattogram to attend a religious event at Hazrat Shahe Malek Shah Mazar Sharif, the OC said.

Members of Navy, Coast Guard and Fire Service jointly conducted the rescue operation after the accident and recovered bodies.
