BGMEA building demolition work begins

DHAKA: Demolition of the BGMEA Building, illegally erected on the Hatirjheel in the capital by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association violating the laws of the land, has begun today (Jan 22).

Housing and public works minister SM Rezaul Karim inaugurated the demolition activities in front of the building at 12:30 am.

Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) officials, members of the law enforcement agencies and fire service were present at that time.

On April 3 in 2011, the High Court ordered demolition of the BGMEA building as it was constructed in defiance of relevant laws, calling it a ‘cancer’ in the lake.

Later on April 3 in 2019, the new BGMEA building located in Uttara was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
