BGMEA building demolition work begins Wednesday

DHAKA: Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) is set to start demolishing the 16-storey Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) complex at Hatirjheel on Wednesday (Jan 22).

Public relations officer (PRO) of the housing and public works ministry Iftekhar Hossain confirmed this to media on Tuesday.

Housing and public works minister SM Rezaul Karim would inaugurate the demolition activities of the BGMEA building at 10:00 am, Iftekhar Hossain told media.

On April 3 in 2011, the High Court ordered demolition of the BGMEA building as it was constructed in defiance of relevant laws, calling it a ‘cancer’ in the lake.

Later on April 3 in 2019, the new BGMEA building located in Uttara was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
