Rifat Murder: HC rejects Minni’s appeal

DHAKA: The High Court (HC) on Tuesday rejected a petition filed by Ayesha Siddika Minni seeking her name to be dropped from the case filed over the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif.

The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman passed the rejection order as her petition was not placed properly.

The court rejected the petition as Minni’s lawyers placed a plea before the court for withdrawing the petition.

Minni's lawyers advocate ZI Khan Panna stood for Minni in the court while Deputy Attorney General FR Khan moved for the state.

Rifat Sharif, 22, of Barguna sadar upazila was hacked to death indiscriminately by Minni's alleged former husband Nayan Bond and his aides in broad daylight in front of Barguna Government College on June 26.

A shocking video of the brutal attack went viral on the social media, sparking widespread outrage and demand for justice from the countrymen.

Police arrested Minni on July 16 and was placed on a five-day remand the following day.

Minni gave a statement confessing her part in the murder before a Barguna court on July 19. On July 21 in 2019, Barguna Senior Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Sirajul Islam Gazi rejected a petition seeking Minni’s bail in the case.

On August 29, the High Court granted bail to Minni.

On September 1, police pressed charges against her and 23 others for their alleged involvement in the murder of Rifat Sharif.

On January 1 this year, Barguna District and Sessions Judges Court framed charges against the accused including Minni.
