DHAKA: Election Commission has deferred the Dhaka city elections date to February 1, following growing pressure from different quarters.
The commission took the decision at a four-hour emergency meeting at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city this evening, said chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Saturday (Jan 18) night.
Different quarters, including the Hindu community, demanded the deferment of the elections to the Dhaka north and south city corporations slated for January 30 that coincide with Saraswati Puja.
Besides, Dhaka University students continued their fast unto death programme for the third consecutive day on Saturday demanding deferment of the polls.
An appeal was also filed on Thursday with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the High Court order that rejected a writ petition seeking deferment of the January-30 elections due to Saraswati Puja.
