13th SAG: Tigresses beat Sri Lanka to win gold in cricket

DHAKA: Bangladesh Women’s cricket team secured the gold medal in the ongoing 13th South Asian Games (SAG) beating Sri Lanka in the final by two runs at Pokhara in Nepal on Sunday (Dec 08).

This is the best achievement so far for Bangladesh Women bagging their first gold medal in SA Games.

Sri Lanka sent Bangladesh to bat first after winning the toss in the final. Bangladesh lost eight wickets to score only 91 runs in 20 overs.

Bangladesh fell into trouble losing five wickets just in 36 runs. Nigar Sultana took the highest 29 runs off 38 balls with two fours and one six. Sanjida Islam and Fahima Khatun contributed with 15 runs each.

Umesha Thimashini picked up four wickets conceding eight runs in four overs with two maidens. Sathya Sandeepani, Tharika Sewwandi, Kavisha Dilhari and Malsha Ranathunga bagged one wicket each for Sri Lanka.

In reply to Bangladesh-set 92-run target, Sri Lanka managed to score 89 for nine in 20 overs. 

Nahida Akter bagged two wickets conceding 9 runs in four overs while Jahanara Alam, Salma Khatun and Khadijatul Kubra picked up one wicket each. Four Sri Lankans were run out in this game.

Bangladesh women emerged the unbeaten champions and clinched their first-ever gold medal in the SA games.
