Transport strike now on Dhaka-Ctg-Sylhet highways

NARAYANGANJ: Transport owners and workers have now enforced indefinite strike on Dhaka-Chattogram and Dhaka-Sylhet highways demanding amendment to the newly enacted road transport law.

They have stopped plying their vehicles on highways since Wednesday morning (NOV 20) except some small vehicles on local routes in Narayanganj.

Transport workers took their position in different spots including Signboard of Narayanganj, Shimrail of Siddhirganj and Kanchpur and obstructed vehicular movement.

They pointed out that it is not possible to go to work keeping in mind the capital punishment for their fault.

Ayub Ali, chairman of Bandhan Transport, told Banglanews that the workers went on work abstention since morning. Basically it is workers’ movement. There is nothing here for the owner.

District Traffic Police Inspector (Admin) Molla Tasnim Hossain, told Banglanews that the workers of Narayanganj had stopped entry and exit of vehicles for Dhaka. They created this barrier in the Signboard area.

On October 22, the Road Transport and Highways Division issued a gazette, stating that the Road Transport Act (RTA) would be effective from November 1. Parliament had passed the RTA in September last year, replacing the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1983.

On November 17, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader declared the enforcement of the new Road Transport Act 2018.
