DHAKA: The 43rd death anniversary of veteran politician Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani is being marked countrywide with due respect on Sunday (Nov 17).

Maulana Bhasani, popularly known as Majlum Jananeta (leader of the oppressed) passed away on November 17 in 1976.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages, paying rich tributes to him.

Marking the day, different socio-cultural organizations will organize various programs, include placing wreaths at Bhasani's grave in Tangail and offering prayers seeking eternal peace of his departed soul.

Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party, Maulana Bhasani Science and Technology University, and Maulana Bhasani Foundation and other political parties, educational institutes and organizations will pay tribute to him by placing wreaths at his grave.

Born in Dhangara village of Sirajganj in 1880, Bhasani fought against the oppression of Pakistani rulers. He played a significant role in the 1969 movement.

The brave and devoted leader worked relentlessly and spent almost his entire life for the oppressed masses.His belief in the secular struggle for Bangladesh was unequivocal.

Bhasani was immensely influential throughout his political career and instrumental in winning many general and local government elections since 1946. Despite that, he always stayed away from holding actual power.
