‘Bulbul’ claims 2 lives, damage 5,000 houses in Barguna

BARGUNA: Rain and winds triggered by cyclone 'Bulbul' claimed at least two lives and injured 17 people  and wreaked havoc in most parts of Barguna on Sunday (Nov 10).

4000-5000 houses have been damaged in the district due to the cyclonic storm Bulbul.

Different areas of Barguna bore the major brunt of the cyclone. Large number of trees was uprooted that halted road communication and thatched houses were damaged in the affected areas.

86 educational institutions were badly affected. In addition, the current Amon season and winter vegetables have faced major losses.

According to sources in the control room of the Barguna Deputy Commissioner's Office, during the cyclone Bulbul, one person died due to old age and another during the cyclone rescue operation.

17 people were injured in a cyclone in six upazilas. Also a fishing trawler carrying 15 fishermen went missing in the Bay of Bengal during the storm.

Agricultural sector faced huge losses caused by incessant rains. Off these, Aman paddy  9,863 hectares, winter vegetables 550 hectares, three livestock killed and 41 injured, 5,265 houses damaged, 86 institutions damaged educational, 38.5 km dam damaged. According to sources in the fisheries department, 60 ponds, 65 fish enclosures and 35 shrimp enclosures are badly affected.

Barguna Deputy Commissioner Mostain Billah said the district administration has so far allocated 294 metric tonnes of rice, Tk 7 lakh, 350 packets of dry food and 50 blankets. Initially we have determined the loss due the cyclone Bulbul. The victims will be rehabilitated by preparing a list of full casualties and sending it to the ministry.
