‘Robber’ killed in N’ganj ‘gunfight’

NARAYANGANJ: A suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Elumdi village in Araihazar upazila early Sunday (Oct 27).

The deceased was identified as Abu Sayeed Choitka, 35, son Nazim Mia of Jorkardia area.  

He was accused in eight cases, including robbery, filed with Araihazar and Sonargaon police stations, police said.

Araihazar Police Station's officer-in-charge Nazrul Islam told Banglanews that earlier on Saturday afternoon; police arrested Abu Sayeed from his home. Later as per information given by him, a team of police went to the area to arrest other robbers.

Sensing presence of policemen, the cohorts of Abu Sayeed opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, he added.

During the “gunfight”, Abu Sayeed was hit by a bullet and died on the spot, the OC claimed.

His body was sent to Narayanganj general Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.

Police recovered a gun from the spot and other robbers managed to flee the scene, OC said.

Four police officials of Araihazar Police Station – SI Siraj, 47, ASI Sabuk Chandra Das, Constables Lito Mia and Rafikul Islam -- were injured in the “gun battle” and took primary treatment, the OC claimed.
