Taskforce formed to bring fugitives back

DHAKA: Bangladesh has formed a new high-powered taskforce to bring back fugitives who have fled abroad to stand trial in the country.

The Cabinet Division, in an order on Tuesday (Oct 22), announced setting up the 11-member taskforce.

The taskforce, headed by Law Minister Anisul Haque, will start by listing all those who have fled abroad to evade justice in Bangladesh to execute the sentences given by the court.

Home Minister, foreign minister, the attorney general, Foreign Secretary, inspector general of police, Public Safety Secretary, Security Secretary, Law Secretary, chief of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), and the head of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) are its members.

Taskforce meetings will be held if needed. The taskforce has the power to induct more members, if necessary.

Earlier in 2014, a taskforce was formed to bring the absconding accused back. However, from now on, the new taskforce will be effective.

The taskforce will work to bring back all the absconding accused, including the killers of Bangabandhu, according to the source.
