40-km tailback on Dhaka-Ctg highway

CUMILLA: Commuters’ suffering peaked during a 40-kilometer long tailback stretching from Shahinagar to both sides of Meghna Bridge on Dhaka-Chattogram highway on Sunday (Oct 20).

Vehicular movement remained halted from Shahidnagar in Daudkandi upazila to Meghna bridge of Dhaka-Chattogram highway since Friday due renovation of Meghna Bridge.

Daudkandi Highway Police said renovation of the Meghna Bridge began on Friday keeping one side of the bridge closed.  So, the vehicles are plying through only one lane. As a result, tailback has been created.

Bahar Uddin, a bus driver who stranded on bridge in Daudkamdi, told Banglanews that usually it took just two hours to go to Dhaka to Cumilla, but for renovation of Meghna Bridge, its takes at least seven to eight hours due to gridlock.

Police was trying to control the traffic congestion, said Sarker Md Abdulalh Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Daudkandi police station.
