Detained Indian fisherman sued in two charges

RAJSHAHI: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) filed two cases, including for intrusion, against the Indian fisherman who was detained on Thursday (Oct 17) for fishing Hilsa in Charghat area of Rajshahi.

The detainee was identified as Pranab Mondol, son of Basantha Mondol of Sahebnagar Chhirachar in Jalangi area of Murshidabad district of India.

Officer-in-charge of Charghat Police Station Samit Kumar Kundu told Banglanews on Friday that Habildar Humayun Kabir of Charghat Border Outpost (BOP), filed two cases against Pranab for entering Bangladesh territory and catching hilsa with current net illegally.

Hours after his detention on Thursday, BGB handed him over to Charghat police station.

The OC also said the detainee has been sent to a Rajshahi court and will be sent to jail if the court orders.

On Thursday night, Rajshahi BGB-1 Battalion Commander Lt. Colonel Ferdous Zia Uddin Mahmud said that BSF troops had illegally crossed the border line within 600-650 yards inside Bangladesh.

They fired at first to take away the detained fisherman. The BGB, later, fired blank shots on self-defense. The BSF members then fired at the BGB and entered into their border.

Later, at the flag meeting of the BGB-BSF, the BSF claimed, one member of them was killed and another member injured during the firing that took place at the Charghat border in Rajshahi. It was an unexpected accident.
