Series Bomb Blast: 5 JMB men get 12-yr jail for Khilkhet attack

DHAKA: A special Dhaka court awarded 12 years’ rigorous imprisonment to five members of Jamaat-ul-Mujaheedin Bangladesh (JMB) for exploding bomb in Dhaka’s Khilkhet area as part of the August 17 countrywide series bomb blast in 2005.

Judge Md Al Mamun of Special Tribunal-2 on Sunday (September 22) passed the order in presence of three convicts.

The convicts are -- Abdullah Al Sohail, Abdur Rahman Mashuk, Nurul Islam alias Uzzal, Habibur Rahman Habib and Md Musa alias Mostafizur Rahman

Of them, Habibur Rahman Habib, Md Musa are on the run. The punishment of the fugitive convicts will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender.

The court also fined Tk 30,000 each, in default, six more months’ imprisonment.

According to case statement, the convicts exploded bomb near Khilkhet foot over bridge in Dhaka on August 17, 2005. Later, the then Assistant Sub Inspector Kowser Alam filed a case with Khilkhet police station in this connection.   

On November 2, 2005 police submitted charge-sheet accusing the five persons under section 3 and 6 of the explosives act. Later on November 20, the court accepted the charge-sheet against the accused.

Later, Abdullah Al Suhail was included in the charge sheet. Them June 12, 2006, the court framed charges against them in the bomb blast case. 

The court recorded depositions of 19 witnesses. After examining the records and witnesses, the court handed down the verdict.

On August 17, 2005, nearly 500 bombs exploded by Jamaat ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) at a time in 300 locations of 63 districts out of 64, except Munshiganj.

A total of 161 cases, accusing more than 700 militants, were filed in this regard but many of them are still under trial.
