DHAKA: Onion prices will come down within 24 hours, said tariff commission’s member Shah Md. Abu Raihan Alberuni.
Tariff commission’s member said this, in presence of Commerce Secretary Dr M Jafar Uddin, after a meeting with the stakeholders at the ministry on Tuesday (September 17).
Commerce Secretary said: “As much as onion is in the storage and import phase, the price will envitably come down. There is no reason to panic.”
In response to a question, Shah Md. Abu Raihan Alberuni said: “We have to import onion, because they are seasonal and decomposable. Our demand is 24 lakh tones. Production is also about 24 tones. But due to decomposable nature, seven and a half lakh tons are being rotted. For this reason, we import 10 to 11 lakh tones.”
