Talks on with Rohingyas cleared for repatriation

COX’S BAZAR:  Talks with Rohingyas cleared for repatriation to Myanmar are going on for the third consecutive day despite the failure of repatriation attempt for the second time.

Starting from 9am, the interview will continue till 5pm on Friday (August 23) in the Rohingya camp of Jadimura Shalbagan in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar.

Mohammad Abul Kalam, Bangladesh’s refugee relief and repatriation commissioner said that efforts would continue till interview of 137 families are not be completed. And if any of them express willingness for returning to Myanmar, they will be sent back there at any time, he said.

The Myanmar government had approved more than 3,000 Rohingya from the list sent by Bangladesh government to be brought back to the country.

Repatriation had stalled again due to refusal of Rohingyas to retrun Myanamr although Bangladesh had done its best to help them return to their homes. The onus was now on Myanmar authorities to address the Rohingyas’ issues “sincerely and convincingly”, the official added.

Earlier on Thursday (August 22), a second attempt to repatriate the thousands of Rohingya Muslims who fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh has failed after the authorities failed to convince the refugees it would be safe to return.
