BIWTA ex official jailed for 7 years

DHAKA: A court here on Tuesday (July 23) sentenced a former official of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) to seven years in jail in a case filed under Money laundering Prevention Act.

Convict Md Abdus Salam, an assistant officer of BIWTA, was also fined Tk 41,19,7,332.

He was ordered to land in jail and his wife Shahnaz Parvin was acquitted in the same case. 

At the same time, the court directed the government to confiscate all of his movable and immovable properties. 

Judge Jainal Abedin of Dhaka Special Judge-10 pronounced the verdict, at noon.  
 
As per the case statement, Salam faked signatures of BIWTA officials and embezzled Tk 20,59,53,516 from BIWTA employees' development fund.
 
BIWTA Deputy Director Md Benjir Ahmed filed the case.

The accused was charge-sheeted on August 5, 2012.
