Murder accused killed in Jamalpur ‘gunfight’

JAMALPUR: An accused in 18 cases was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Bakshiganj upazila here early Monday (July 22).

The deceased was identified as Shipon, 32, son of Jalal uddin of Sadar upazila in Sherpur.

AKM Mahbubul Alam, officer-in-charge of Bakshiganj Police Station, said people caught Shipon while conducting roobery in boats at Bakshiganj on Sunday (July 21) night and handed over to police.

According to his information, police launched drives in Sarmara and Ramrampur areas to seize drugs and firearms.

When they reached Dumurtola under Kamalpur union, his associates opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back in self defence early hours of the day, triggering a gunfight.

Police recovered bullet-hit Shipon and took him to upazila health complex where doctor declared him dead, he added.

Shipon was accused in 18 cases, including murder, the OC added. 

Four police personnel –Sub Inspectors of Bakshiganj Police Station Azizur Rahman and Razu ahmed, constables Nokret Kong and Milzanur Rahman – were injured in the gunfight, police claimed.

Later, police recovered a motorcycle, a pipe gun and 300 pieces of yaba tablets from the spot.
