War trail: Mahbub to die for RP Shaha murder

DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced Mahbubur Rahman to death in three charges including abduction and killing of philanthropist Ranada Prasad Saha and his son in 1971.

The three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam on Thursday (June 27) pronounced the verdict in the case in presence of the convict at the dock. 

Gazi MH Tamim was the defence counsel while Advocate Rana Dasgupta was the prosecutor.  

Mahbubur Rahman was a Jamaat-e-Islami follower. He contended for the chairman post of Mirzapur Union Parishad in Tangail as an independent candidate three times but failed to win.

Earlier on April 24, the tribunal declared the judgment CAV in a case filed against Mahbubur Rahman over crimes against humanity after the counsels of both sides wrapped up their closing arguments.

Earlier on March 28 in 2018, the tribunal framed three charges against Mahbubur Rahman of Mirzapur in Tangail for alleged wartime crimes including the abduction and killing of philanthropist Ranada Prasad Shaha and his son.

He was also charged with abduction and killing of 55 others in two separate incidents in 1971.

Mahbubur has been in jail since November in 2016. 

On February 11 last year, the court took the charges brought against him into cognizance.

During the war of liberation, the accused committed crime against humanity in the area around Bharateshwari Homes of Mirzapur in Tangail, Kumudini Welfare Trust and adjoining areas in Khanpur of Narayanganj and Tangail Circuit House area.
