Labour export: HC seeks probe report on 10 agencies

DHAKA: The High Court has directed the inter-ministerial committee which formed as per court order to submit the probe report by July 18 on role of 10 recruiting agencies engaged in labour recruitment from Bangladesh to Malaysia.

The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal on Wednesday (June 26) passed the order after hearing a writ-petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The court also rejected an application filed by ACC seeking removal its name from the probe committee formed by the government.

Earlier on October 29, 2018 the High Court directed the government to form an inter-ministerial committee to investigate the monopoly of 10 recruiting agencies engaged in labour recruitment from Bangladesh to Malaysia.

The court also asked the authorities concerned to submit the probe report in six months.

It also asked the authorities concerned why they should not be ordered to take action against the proprietors and the managing partners of the syndicate of 10 recruitment agencies and compensate the 10 petitioners.

Later on February 10, 2019 the government has formed an inter-ministerial committee including a member from Anti Corruption Commission to investigate the monopoly of 10 recruiting agencies.

Ten other deprived agencies filed a writ in the High Court, challenging the legitimacy of role of 10 agencies in recruitment of workers from Bangladesh to Malaysia, ignoring the agreement between two governments.

According to the terms of the G-2G Plus contract between the two countries in February 2016, the whole process of recruitment of workers will be through online. The Malaysian government appointed a company there for this purpose. The Malaysian company had joined hands with 10 agencies in Bangladesh to send workers.
