DHAKA: Bangladesh was elected a member of the prestigious Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations from the Asia-Pacific region by securing 181 votes out of 191.
Bangladesh is set to carry out this duty starting from January of 2020 for three years-2020-2022.
Apart from Bangladesh, Thailand, South Korea, and China were also elected from the Asia-Pacific region.
The election was held, under the Presidency of María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, at the UN General Assembly Hall on Friday (June 14).
Espinosa Garcés is the President of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly.
“This ECOSOC membership will help us achieve sustainable graduation and accelerate progress in the implementation of Agenda 2030,” said Permanent Representative (PR) of Bangladesh to the UN Ambassador Masud Bin Momen.
Bangladesh became member of ECOSOC in 2018 and carried out United Nations Human Rights Council’s charge for the 2019-2021 terms.
