NETRAKONA: State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said 10,000 km of waterways will be dredged to ensure the country’s socio-economic development and also to restore its heritage.
He was inaugurating the work of excavation of Bhogai-Kangsha river in Purbadhala upazila of Netrokona on Thursday (May 23).
Shipping Minister said the river transportation is an affordable, comfortable and environment friendly communication medium in the country.
According to the sources, BIWTA has started digging 155 kilometer waterways of the Bhogai-Kangsha river from Mohanganj upazila to Barhatta, Purbadhala of Netrakona, Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh and Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur. Expenditure for the dredging work has been estimated at 134.64 crore.
Five companies, including Bashundhara Infrastructure Development Ltd, will do the dredging work. The dredging work is scheduled to be completed by June 2021.
