“WASA to be held responsible if...”

DHAKA: WASA will take responsibility if someone falls sick after drinking water supplied by the water and sewerage authority, said WASA director (Technical) AKM Shahid Uddin.

He made the remark in a meeting with protesters from Jurain, who went to Wasa Bhaban on Tuesday (April 23), to serve juice made from Jurain’s supply water to its Managing Director Taqsem Khan protesting his remark that Wasa water is “100 per cent drinkable”.

But he was not available and instead of the Wasa MD, its Director AKM Shahid Uddin held meeting with the protestors to calm down their agony.

In the meeting, Shahid Uddin said, Wasa water is “100 percent drinkable” rendering support to the remark of Wasa’s managing director Taqsem A Khan.

“The water that we used to collect from the deep tube well is 100 percent safe. There is also a three-layer testing before sending the water to reserve, after collected. If any harmful bacteria to humans especially Ekolai' found in the water, it is purified with the required chlorine. I myself also drink WASA water directly at my house”, said the Wasa Director.

In the meeting, Shahid Uddin assured Mizanur Rahman of taking quick action in the wake of the allegations.

When protesters tried to serve the ‘juice’ to him, he refused to drink it.

Mizanur Rahman, a protestor from Jurain area, said WASA assured us to take swift steps to ensure drinkable water supply to Jurain area. We will wait for implement their assurance. Then, we will resume our movement for safe supply water.”

Earlier on April 20, Dhaka WASA Managing Director (MD) Taqsem A Khan trashed a recent report by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) alleging unsafe water supply by Dhaka WASA.

In a recent report titled “Dhaka WASA: Challenges for Good Governance and Way Forward”, TIB said as many as 37.5 percent users expressed dissatisfaction over Wasa’s water supply and sewerage treatment services.
