Accused killed in Ctg ‘gunfight’

CHATTOGRAM:  A murder accused was killed in a reported gunfight with police near Agrabad area of the port city early on Tuesday (April 23).

The deceased was identified as Jabed, an accused of killing Awami League leader Mohiuddin Sohel in alleged ‘mob beating’.

During the gunfight, Sudip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Double Mooring Police Station, also suffered injuries by bullet. Three more police officials also were reportedly injured.

The OC was initially taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and then shifted to Police Lines Hospital.

Ashikur Rahman, senior assistant commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police said that on information about the location of Jabed that a team of police, led by OC Sudip Kumar Das conducted drive in the area to arrest him around 12:00am.

Sensing the presence of police, the accused opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, leaving Jabed injured with bullet. 

Later, the injured was taken to CMCH where doctor declared him dead.  

The police team also recovered a pistol and arms with several round bullets from the spot.

Earlier on January 7, the former Chhatra League leader Mohiuddin Sohel was lynched by mob at Pahartali bazar of the port city on allegation of extortion.
