Mujibnagar Day observed in Belgium

DHAKA: Historic Mujibnagar Day has been observed at Brussels in Belgium with a pledge to build exploitation-free, developed, modern Bangladesh, thwarting evil efforts of the anti-liberation fundamentalist forces. 

Attendees at the programme paid tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Mohammad Quamruzzman, and Capt. Mansur Ali.

Speakers at the discussion said the nation should be to unite in a bid to build exploitation-free, developed, modern Bangladesh cherished by the Mujibnagar government through preventing anti-liberation forces under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, it’s General Secretary Jahangir Chowdhury Ratan said. 

Belgium unit Awami League organised the programme to observe the historic day marking the swearing-in of the provisional government of Bangladesh.

On April 17, 1971, the tiny mango grove-covered village in Baidyanathtala witnessed the ceremonial formation of the provisional government of Bangladesh and millions of freedom loving people listened to the announcement of the formation of the government through radio.

With organization's president Shahidul Haque in the chair, the meeting was addressed by senior vice-president Bidan Dav, Vice President Niranjon Roy, Vice President Zaheer Khan, General Secretary Jahangir Chowdhury Ratan, joint secretary Saidur Rahman Khan, Publicity Secretary Akhtaruzzaman.

Following the Pakistan occupation army's attack on unarmed people on the night of March 25 in 1971, the first government of an independent People's Republic of Bangladesh was formed on April 10 in 1971 comprising the elected representatives with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as its president, Syed Nazrul Islam as vice-president and Tajuddin Ahmad as prime minister.

On April 10, the elected representatives firmly supported and approved the declaration of independence by Bangabandhu on March 26, 1971, and issued a formal proclamation of independence.
