3 killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfights’ with cops

COX’S BAZAR: Two alleged yaba traders and a suspected mugger were killed in separate gunfights with lawmen at Rajarchhara in Teknaf upazila and district sadar on Friday (March 22). 

The deceased were identified as Nur Mohammad, 40, son of Azahar Mia of Nazirpara, Nurul Amin, 35, son of Abdus Shukkur of Jaliapara in the upazila and Md Korban Ali, 25, an accused of tourist murder case and a mugger.

In Teknaf upazila, two alleged yaba traders were killed in a reported gunfight between the drug smuggling gang and police at Rajarchhara early in the morning.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, told Banglanews that tipped off, a team of police went to Rajarchhara to recovered yaba pills and firearms.  

Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire on them which prompted the lawmen to fire back.

The two criminals came in the line of fire and died on the spot while the others managed to escape the scene. 

Police, however, recovered 20,000 yaba pills and 20 rounds of cartridges from the spot. 

Both of them enlisted yaba traders according to the list of the home ministry and were accused in a number of cases, the OC added.

The bodies were sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

In Sadar upazila, an accused of tourist murder case and also a mugger Md Korban Ali was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Detective Branch of police at Khurushkul. 

Tipped off that a gang of muggers took position in Khurushkul Bridge area, a team of police went to the area to thwart the mugging incident.

Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire on them which prompted the detectives to retaliate.

Korban came in the line of fire, leaving him injured while the others managed to escape the scene.

Later, he was taken hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

He was wanted in five cases, including murder and brother of kingpin of notorious Nekel Bhahini of the district town, said Md Humayun Kabir, officer in charge of Cox’s Bazar DB police.

On December 15, 2017, Korban allegedly hacked a tourist--- Abu Taher Sagor, son of Shafiullah of Sonagazi upazila of Feni –to death in Jambur intersection area of Cox’s Bazar.
