Metro rail construction to be completed by 2020

JATIYA SANGSAD: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told the parliament that the construction work of the country’s first ever metro rail project will be completed by 2020.

He said this in reply to a written question of Mohammad Shahidul Islam MP in question answer session of the parliament with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair. 

The Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit or country’s first metro rail project has been taken with a cost of Tk 22,000 crore ($2.5 billion) to ease traffic congestion in the capital city with an improved and faster public transportation services. It is a fast-tracked project, the minister said. 
    
The 20.10-kilometer metro rail, stretching from Uttara to Bangladesh Bank in Motijheel, will have stations at 16 points of the city to carry 60,000 passengers throughout the capital, Obaidul Quader added. 

According to the project, the construction work was scheduled to be completed by 2024.

As per instruction of the Prime Minister, construction of the first part stretching from Uttara to Agargaon will be completed by December in 2019 while construction of full metro rail to Bangladesh Bank by December 2020.
