CHATTOGRAM: At least nine persons were burnt to death and several others injured as a fire broke out at a slum in Bhera Market area of Chaktai in Chattogram city early Sunday (Feb 16). 

The charred bodies were recovered from the spot.

The fire originated around 3:30am.

On information, 10 units of firefighters rushed to the spot and launched efforts to douse the fire.

Of the deceased, seven were from two families, said Fire Service official Jashim Uddin.

They were identified as—Rahima Akter, 36, Nazma Akter, 27, Jakir Hossain Babu, 8, Nasrin, 16, Hasina Akter, 35, Ayesha, 37 and Sohag, 19.

The fire, however, was brought under control afterwards.

How the fire originated couldn’t be known immediately, said Jashim Uddin.

Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Md Elias Hossain visited the spot.

A four-member committee has been formed headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Mashhudul Kabir, to run investigation into the incident.
