UN calls for meaningful forms of dialogue in Bangladesh

DHAKA: The United Nations urged all the political sphere of Bangladesh to engage in meaningful forms of dialogues in a bid to reach a positive solution.

“We encourage the different areas of the Bangladeshi political sphere to engage in meaningful forms of dialogue in order for the political life in Bangladesh to be as positive as possible”, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at a press conference held at UN headquarters in New York Friday (Jan 18).

Asked about the UN Chief’s observation on the December 30 Bangladesh election held amid allegations of vote rigging and intimidation, Antonio Guterres said the elections were not perfect.

In reply to another query, whether the UN will send any envoy or any special team to investigate the whole thing and to restore democracy in Bangladesh, the UN chief also said “We have not the right to do investigations like that unless we're mandated for that”

He also said “Bangladesh is a very important partner for the United Nations in relation to the Rohingya refugees, and we are extremely grateful to Bangladesh for its generosity in hosting so many Rohingya refugees in the extremely difficult circumstances that exist and taking into account the problems and the difficulties of the Bangladeshi development in itself.”
