DHAKA: The number of arrestees reached five as the law enforcers arrested another member of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) over the killings of LGBT magazine founder Xulhaz Mannan and his theater activist friend Mahbub Tonoy in Dhaka in 2016.

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) carried out a drive and nabbed Asadullah from Tongi township area of Gazipur on Tuesday (Jan 15) night.

CTTC Chief Monirul Islam disclosed the matter at a press briefing at DMP Media Center Wednesday (Jan 16) noon.

“A total of seven persons took part in the killing mission,” he said.

“Five of the seven took part in the operation and the rest two collected information from outside. Of the five, Asadullah and Arafat directly carried out the murders,” added the CTTC chief.

All the suspects are activists of ABT.

Asadullah was a Dawrah trainer of ABT’s military wing and also an activist of Jamaat Shibir in Jashore and his father was a leader of Jamaat’s Rukon level, according to Monirul.

Former protocol officer to US ambassador to Dhaka Xulhaz Mannan and Mahbub Tonoy were hacked to death at Xulhaz’s residence in Kalabagan of Dhaka on April 25, 2016.
