Discipline restored in garment industry: Commerce Minister Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi

DHAKA: Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said discipline is back in the garment industry following the Sunday’s announcement of revised wage structure for the sector.

He on Monday (Jan 14) also announced that Tk one lakh will be provided to family members of the deceased worker during the demonstration.

“Work has started in 100 percent garment factory in Tongi and Gazipur. The workers have joined the work,” Tipu Munshi said this while talking to Banglanews at his secretariat office.

The families of the worker who was killed during last several days’ demonstration will get compensation according to the rules of the government. I personally will give them Tk one lakh as compensation.

Mentioning that wages for workers of six grades, including five percent increment, have been adjusted following directives from the prime minister, the minister said “The wage has been increased by highest Tk 5,257 while lowest one is Tk 2700.”

“The revised structure will take effect from last December which will be adjusted with the wage of January. A fresh gazette notification will be issued within one or two days”, said the minister.

“Legal action should be taken against those who vandalized factories and vehicles during the movement”, he opined.

The minister hoped all the workers will work hard to compensate the loss that incurred during the past few days’ unrest.

Responding to a question, Tipu Munshi said ready-made garment is the main export sector. 80 percent of the export earnings comes from this sector. That’s why the prime minister has personal interest in the sector. Especially after the Rana Plaza collapse, the Prime Minister is directly monitoring the sector.
