Expatriates to vote thru postal ballot

DHAKA: Expatriate Bangladeshis will exercise their franchises in the 11th Parliamentary Election through postal ballots, says a source at the foreign ministry.

The Election Commission has already completed its task as if voters can vote for their preferred candidates from abroad. It also sent a letter to the foreign ministry in this regard.

After receiving the letter, the ministry directed all the Bangladesh Missions to take necessary steps for vote by expatriates Bangladeshis. Bangladesh Missions have started informing expatriate Bangladeshis to cast their votes.

As per RPO, expats who are registered as voters can vote for their preferred candidates from abroad through postal ballots.

The process is to cast vote from abroad that expatriates will have to apply via postal mail or email to the returning officers for their constituencies and they will send a postal ballot. The voter will then vote for the preferred candidate and mail it back. But the whole process has to be completed before the voting ends, says the source.

Bangladesh Embassy in Nigeria, on December 16, issued a press release regarding the issue. Many expats have already applied for the postal ballots.
