‘Drug trader’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

COX’S BAZAR: A suspected drug trader was killed in a "gunfight" between law enforcers and a gang of drag traders in Teknaf upazila of the district on Friday (Dec 14)

The deceased was identified as Yusuf Jalal Bahadur, 32, son of Khalilur Rahman of Choto Habib para in Teknaf sadar.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Taknaf Model Police Station, said law enforcers picked up Yusuf on Thursday afternoon as he was an enlisted yaba trader. He was also accused in 12 cases, including killing and smuggling drugs.

Following Yusuf’s statement, a team of police took him to Choto Habib para of Teknaf around 3:00pm to recover firearms, he added.

Sensing the presence of police, Yusuf’s cohorts opened "gunshots" at police officials, forcing them to retaliate. After the exchange of "gunshots", police found Yusuf was shot to death, the OC claimed.

Later, the body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Five police officials were also injured in the "gunfight," police said.

Police recovered 30,000 yaba tablets, 11 firearms and 40 rounds bullets from the spot.

Three cases will be filed in this connection, the OC added.
