Presidents, PM pay homage to Martyred Intellectuals

DHAKA: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the nation’s glorious sons, placing floral wreaths at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Memorial at Mirpur in the city Friday (Dec 14) morning.

Later, Members of martyred and freedom fighters placed wreaths at Martyred Intellectuals Memorial.

People from all walks of life are paying their pride-filled respects to the memorial in the morning.

A smartly turned out contingent of Bangladesh Armed Forces gave a state salute, while the bugle played the last post at that time.

Later, Sheikh Hasina went to Dhanmondi in the capital and placed a wreath at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum marking the Martyred Intellectuals Day.

14 December is being observed as the Martyred Intellectuals Day to commemorate the systematic execution of Bengali pro-liberation intellectuals during the Bangladesh liberation war of 1971 by the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, most notably the Al-Badr.

The great sons of the soil were killed with an evil motive to cripple the Bengali nation just two days before the country earned its victory.

On the occasion of the Day, President, premier, speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Leader of the Opposition Rowshan Ershad, in separate messages, recalled the martyred intellectuals’ great contribution to the emerging nation.

To observe the day, ruling Awami League and other political parties have also chalked out different programmes

The ruling party is scheduled to arrange a meeting at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh around 3:00pm, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair.
